Telepresence is a technology that allows corporations to communicate with each other in conferences without having to gather all participants in one location. This form of video conferencing has gained more favor over the last several years as the technology has improved. There are several different players in this field and they include companies such as Cisco, Polycom, Hewlett Packard, LifeSize, Teliris, Telanetix, Tandberg and BrightCom. Two of the leaders in the
industry are Cisco and Polycom with the products that they offer.
Cisco can be considered one of the leaders their Cisco Telepresence product. It delivers a unique,
“in person” experience with remote participants. You’ll be able to interact and collaborate with others like never before, moving faster and more effectively. Cisco TelePresence interactions use industry leading video, audio and environments to create real-time, live and in-person communications amongst participants of a meeting.
There are several different version of Cisco Telepresence that depends on the number of participants involved in the communications between sites. As a telepresence provider, the Cisco TelePresence System 500 utilizes a 37-inch display, camera, an interesting microphone array, speakers and specially-designed lighting in a complete solution that can be placed on a desk. You can also mount it on a wall or stand on a pedestal in a private office. This particular model creates one of the first high-definition telepresence experiences for personal use.
The top of the line product is the Cisco TelePresence System 3200. It builds on the success of the six-person Cisco TelePresence System 3000 by tripling the room capacity. This is an advance from this telepresence provider. It improves the virtual table with a second row of seating for larger venues. This is the perfect selection for corporate headquarters sites or large regional offices. It allows large teams to meet and collaborate virtually with remote participants when much of the team is in one physical location. You can also use it to conduct training or classroom
One of the telepresence providers that is considered a leader in this area is Polycom. While many may know them for their wide range of telephone systems they also have a couple of powerful telepresence products as well. The Polycom RealPresence Experience High Definition (RPX HD) 200 Series video center is one of the products that the company sells as well as the higher capacity RPX HD 400 Series.
The RPX HD 200 includes an 8 foot of seamless and cinematic video wall. Every participant involved in the conference is shown in high definition with true-to-life dimensions. The patented Polycom EyeConnect technology is included from this particular telepresence provider. According to the company, meeting participants can pick up every nuance of a conversation, see facial expressions, make eye contact, and read body language during the conference.
This telepresence provider also offers the RPX HD 400. It can be used for much larger conferences with its full screen and 48:9 cinematic view. This particular Polycom product has a seating capacity for 8 to 28 participants. Multiple rows of individuals are shown on the viewing screen allowing for a full view of the other location’s individuals.
Other products are available on the market today however these two telepresence providers, Cisco and Polycom, seem to have the edge when it comes to this type of product.
